As the days become shorter and colder, you’ll need to rely on the furnace more frequently to keep your home cozy and comfortable. However, before you fire it up for the season, it’s important to ensure it’s in working order. Doing so ensures optimal efficiency and reduces the risk of needing emergency heating system repairs on a frigid day. Here are a few steps to get your furnace ready for the cold.

3 Steps to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter

1. Replace Filters

The HVAC system’s air filters trap particles, including dust, dirt, and pet dander, to prevent them from accumulating inside the unit or circulating indoors. If they become dirty or clogged, they can inhibit airflow, forcing the heater to work harder to maintain the desired temperature.

Not only do dirty screens require the HVAC system to consume more energy, but they also accelerate wear and tear. Replace the filters every four to six weeks to avoid such issues. If the unit uses reusable filters, vacuum the dust with a hose and wash with soap and water.

2. Check Ducts & Vents

Like air filters, ducts and vents can become dirty and inhibit airflow and heating efficiency. Obstructions, such as furniture and clutter, can also decrease circulation and become fire hazards. Open all vents and remove any obstacles so that there are at least 10 inches of clearance. Then, clean the vents by vacuuming the dust and wiping them with a soft, moist cloth.

3. Test the Thermostat

If the thermostat isn’t working, it can prevent the heater from doing its job. Turn it on “heat” and wait a minute or two. You should hear the furnace turn on and experience noticeable warmth within a few moments.

If nothing happens, try changing the batteries. If that doesn’t work, call a heating system repair professional.

Additionally, if you don’t already have one, consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat. This product allows you to program the temperature based on your unique schedule, conserving energy without diminishing comfort.
