If your child or teen has expressed interest in dance classes, you might be wondering what style is right for them. There are countless types to try out, from swing to hip-hop. However, three of the most popular forms of dance are ballet, jazz, and lyrical. Here’s a brief guide to understanding these approaches.

What Is the Difference Between Ballet, Jazz, & Lyrical Dance Styles?

Ballet

Ballet, which originated in 15th Century Italy, is known as the foundation of all Western dance forms. When it reached France, the style formally evolved, developing its signature movements and terminology. It is a highly structured dance characterized by consistent patterns and graceful, fluid movements. Dancing on the balls of the feet and using pointe shoes are also characteristics of ballet.

Beginner dance classes start at the barre, where dancers work on strength, flexibility, and technique before moving to floor work. Since ballet is steeped in tradition, there is a universal uniform that includes wearing a leotard, tights, and flat slippers or pointe shoes. Dancers often also wear tutus in performances.

Jazz

Jazz dancing originated from African celebratory and ritual dances, which enslaved peoples brought to North America and the Caribbean. Today, there are different styles within this genre, but jazz ballet is the form taught in most dance classes. It utilizes many of ballet’s signature elements and incorporates the expressiveness of modern dance.

Some forms also involve elements of contemporary styles, such as hip-hop. Jazz requires strength and control and includes syncopated rhythms, percussive movements, dynamic leaps and turns, and improvisation.

Lyrical

Lyrical dance, an offshoot of jazz, was initially called lyrical jazz. It combines ballet techniques with the fluidity of jazz movements, though contemporary forms also incorporate elements of hip-hop.

Dancers use facial expressions and body language to connect with the audience and evoke emotions through storytelling; choreographers may base movements on the music’s lyrics rather than the rhythm of the song. Other characteristics of the style include high jumps, fluid turns, and poses that highlight dancers’ strength and flexibility.
