Loose fill insulation is made of small particles that are blown into a space. The loose material can fit into a space of any size or shape without displacing anything or damaging the structure, making it a popular choice for home improvement projects, such as remodels, finishing attic floors, or beefing up insulation. To select the loose fill that's right for your property, check out the most common types below.

What Are the Popular Loose Fill Insulation Options?

1. Cellulose

This eco-friendly option mainly consists of recycled newspaper or wood fiber boxes. The newsprint is shredded and pulverized into small particles, then ammonium sulfate and borate are added, making the insulation highly fire- and -insect resistant. Borate also protects against mold and mildew growth. Cellulose typically has an R-value between 3.2 and 3.8 per inch and traps air between its particles, which provides excellent sound insulation through walls or between floors.

2. Fiberglass

This insulation is made of molten glass and spun into small fibers. Most manufacturers use 20–50% recycled glass, making it a relatively environmentally friendly option. Fiberglass loose fill has a typical R-value of 2.2 to 2.7 per inch. It's more efficient than fiberglass batting because the fibers pack together more closely and fill all the cracks in a space. The airtight seal formed also helps with noise insulation and preventing condensation.

3. Mineral Wool

Mineral wool may be made of rock or slag wool. Rock wool consists of natural minerals, such as diabase or basalt, while slag wool is composed of blast furnace slag, or the thick material that forms on the surface of molten metal. Mineral wool usually has around 75% recycled content and is incombustible, so it's excellent at preventing the spread of fire. With fibers that pack extremely tightly together, mineral's R-value is usually between 3.7 and 4.2 per inch.
