Mold inspections are essential for spotting potentially hazardous spores inside your home that can cause allergic reactions and respiratory illness. Many contractors offer these inspections but are not fully certified. It's worth taking the time to find one who is to ensure they are educated on proper testing and treatment procedures. Here is a brief guide to understanding why certification is important.

Why Certification Matters

Many states, including Missouri, do not require mold inspectors to be licensed or certified. This does not, however, mean that certified inspectors aren't available. Certified professionals choose to invest their time and money in becoming educated on the proper way to properly find, scientifically test, and remove the mold using specialized equipment like humidity gauges, infrared cameras, and rotameters. This training also includes learning about the inner workings of HVAC and plumbing systems, roofs, and other common sources of hidden mold.

What Mold Inspectors Do

Testing

There are two methods of collecting samples. Air sampling uses a canister or trap to collect an airborne sample and surface sampling uses swabs or tape to take a sample from a surface. Samples of any mold found in your home during a mold inspection will be sent to either the local health department or a private laboratory for testing. This testing will identify the type of mold, which will dictate how to most effectively remove it and prevent it from returning.

Treatment

Certified mold professionals are trained to safely remove mold from your home without releasing harmful dust into your air supply. This includes removing as much material as possible, treating the surrounding areas with antimicrobial chemicals, and completely drying the space with industrial fans and dehumidifiers.

Most importantly, the source of the water damage or excess moisture will be removed and sealants will be applied to prevent mold from growing in the same areas again in the future.
