Running is one of the most beneficial forms of exercise. When done incorrectly, however, or when you have ongoing physical conditions, you could find yourself in need of a physical therapist due to any of a number of common running injuries. Take a look at some of the most frequently-seen injuries encountered while running in the following article.

What Are Some Common Running Injuries?

1. Shin Splints

Medial tibial stress syndrome, or MTSS, better known as shin splints, is a common occurrence for those new to running. The term refers to pain felt along the front or inside of the shin bone, or tibia. Usually, it occurs due to changes in your exercise routine, such as taking up running for the first time, increasing distance, or running more frequently. Shin splints can become less frequent over time, but the most effective way to counter them is to reduce the length of your runs and your pace and to stretch before running.

2. Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis refers to an inflammation of the plantar fascia, the tissue extending from the heel to the toes along the bottom of the foot. The most common symptom of this condition is extreme pain in the heel, particularly with the first steps you take after waking up.

Plantar fasciitis can occur for no apparent reason at all, but it’s more likely to affect those with high arches and tight calf muscles. A physical therapist can recommend some useful stretches to alleviate pain and tightness. You may also find it helpful to get plenty of rest before and after running, wear supportive footwear, and ice the bottom of your feet after exercising.

3. Runner’s Knee

Runner's knee is a common overuse injury. Also called Patellofemoral syndrome, it’s typically caused either by a naturally-occurring structural defect in the knee, or by certain ways of walking and running. In either case, the cartilage in the knee breaks down gradually, thus raising the chances of experiencing pain, discomfort, and injury, particularly when bending the knees or climbing stairs.

The most effective way to treat runner’s knee is by resting and using elastic bandages, ice packs, and over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen to reduce discomfort and inflammation. You can decrease the chances of a flare-up by doing more stretches and strengthening exercises between runs.
