Whether you're wrestling with a dull complexion, occasional acne, or some texture issues, developing a routine and committing to it is critical to improving your skin. While there's no substitute for meeting with a dermatologist, the right routine can do wonders. Although everyone's needs differ, here are some essential aspects of creating a successful routine.

Do:

Remove makeup before sleeping.

A skincare routine starts with clean skin. Even if it's just a light layer of tinted moisturizer or a few coats of mascara, always remove your makeup before sleeping. Any dermatologist will tell you that removing makeup is more important than any specific serum, toner, or moisturizer. Makeup can trap dirt and the natural oils your skin produces throughout the day, leading to clogged pores, breakouts, and a dull complexion. Eye makeup that's left for too long can cause eye infections too.

Research which ingredients serve your goals.

Although medical jargon can be overwhelming, it's worth it to learn about the most common ingredients in skincare products. Then, once you're familiar with the basics, it'll help you find what works best for you. For example, if you're having chronic dry skin issues, be wary of products that put ingredients like alcohol at the top of the list; the closer they are to the beginning, the higher the amount of that ingredient. You can also approach it from the opposite method and look for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. If you need help with what to look for or look out for, feel free to ask a dermatologist.

Don't:

Forget SPF.

After your moisturizer or facial oil, always apply some SPF. In addition to skin cancer and burns, excessive sun exposure can exacerbate wrinkles and intensify uneven complexions. Even if it's cloudy, remember to apply some SPF. You can get it in varying forms, from lotions to powders, so you can always make it work with your makeup routine too.

Ignore the importance of water.

Finally, great skin depends on what you're putting inside your body, not just on top of it. Drinking enough water can help keep your skin plump and glowing. A good guideline for getting enough water is to take your body weight in pounds and then divide that number in half; that's how many ounces to drink.
