When you experience damage to your windshield, you may find yourself wondering whether you can repair the auto glass, or if you need a complete windshield replacement. Fortunately, there are several basic guidelines that repair professionals can use to determine if a fix is possible or not. The following are common situations when a replacement will be needed.

When Should You Get a Windshield Replacement?

1. Large or Deep Cracks

The size of the crack will determine whether the windshield can be repaired. Generally speaking, if a crack is longer than the size of a dollar bill, it will be too large for repairs to be effective. This is also true of cracks that penetrate more than halfway into the windshield. This can expose the windshield’s inner plastic layer, resulting in widespread discoloration. Similarly, rock chips larger than a quarter will typically require a windshield replacement.

2. Bad Crack Location

Even if the crack is small enough that it could be repaired, its location on the windshield could make a replacement necessary. Repairs will typically leave small residual markings on the glass.

If the crack is in the driver’s line of sight, a replacement will be recommended to prevent such markings from interfering with their view while driving. Cracks that reach the edge of the windshield can also significantly weaken its structural integrity, making replacement a must.

3. Large Number of Chips

While small cracks and rock chips can be repaired, three or more damaged areas indicate you should probably replace the windshield instead. The more cracks the windshield sustains, the weaker it becomes, even after repairs. A replacement will have the strength to protect you during an accident.
