Window tinting can increase privacy, protect interiors from UV damage, and give vehicles a sleek, modern look. Once you get your auto glass tinted, you might wonder how to properly clean the windows. Here are a handful of do's and don'ts to guide you through the process.

Do:

Wash them in the shade.

Grayish-white streaks are often more noticeable on tinted auto glass due to the high contrast between the colors. Washing windows in the sun may cause water and cleaning chemicals to dry before you have a chance to wipe away these substances. This can increase the likelihood of unsightly streaks developing on the glass. You may avoid this by cleaning auto windows in the shade and using a clean cloth to dry up all residues.

Wait before you wash.

Following a window tinting appointment, the auto glass needs time to cure. Cleaning the windows within the first few days might cause the tinting film to wear or wash away, making it appear translucent and splotchy. Additionally, water and cleaning products may cause newly-tinted windows to pucker and bubble. You can prevent these problems by waiting at least 72 hours after tinting before you wash the glass.

Don't:

Saturate the edges.

The edges of tinted auto glass, where the window film stops, are most vulnerable to cracking, peeling, and bubbling. Saturating the edges with moisture and cleaning solutions may make them more likely to develop these damages. Once you rinse your vehicle, use a spray bottle to apply a thin, even layer of product to the auto glass before wiping it with a microfiber cloth.

Use harsh chemicals, tools, and methods.

Products that contain harsh chemicals, such as ammonia, may deteriorate the tinting on windows, causing the material to become thin and discolored. Additionally, using abrasive sponges and scrubbing too vigorously might cause the tinting film to become scuffed or scratched. You can protect your auto glass by cleaning it with mild detergent diluted with water, wiping it with soft microfiber cloths, and using a series of gentle vertical and horizontal strokes while you wash.
