One of the arguably best ways to enhance your home’s interior is with hardwood floors. They provide a classically-beautiful element while also offering hypoallergenic, longevity, and low maintenance benefits. Since this flooring is made of wood, it can warp when conditions are “right.” Learn what causes hardwood warping and how to prevent it here.

How to Keep Hardwood Floors From Warping

What Causes Wood Flooring to Warp?

Wood is naturally porous and therefore capable of absorbing water. If wood flooring is continually exposed to water, such as from an undiagnosed plumbing leak in an adjacent wall cavity, it starts warping. Spills that do not get cleaned up immediately also contribute to warping, as do water-using appliances that start leaking, such as washing machines and dishwashers.

Warping occurs because of high humidity. Wood expands in reaction to hot, humid temperatures, then contracts when the temperature drops. Repeated expansions and contractions cause buckling and warping. High moisture content on the subfloor during installation is another reason for warped hardwood floors.

How Can This Be Prevented?

To keep your wood flooring in excellent condition, maintain the humidity level in your home. Humidity between 30% and 50% prevents warping, among other problems, including mold growth. Mold thrives at humidity levels of 60% or higher. You’ll also want to wipe up any spills as soon as you see them, and check for plumbing leaks about once a month. Hidden leak signs include brownish spots on walls and ceilings, musty odors indicating mold growth, and wet-to-the-touch drywall. Blistering paint and wallpaper also indicate leaks.

Keep doors and windows closed when it’s raining or snowing, since both elements contribute to warped floorboards. Place mats in front of all doors and encourage family members to take their shoes off upon entering to avoid tracking moisture in. Sweep your floors regularly as well, since dirt and grime can accumulate under the floorboards and eventually cause them to lift.
