Most roofs can last for decades with proper maintenance, but none are impervious to damage from the elements or the effects of time. Scheduling prompt roof repair when needed can help to minimize damage and extend your roof's lifespan considerably. Here are a few signs that it’s time to call a roofing contractor.

How to Tell Your Roof Needs Repairing

1. Clogged Gutters

It’s normal for gutters to accumulate leaves and debris, which you or your roofer should routinely remove. However, if they’re clogged with shingle granules, sludge, or other roof matter, it may indicate the roof is deteriorating and needs to be repaired.

Clogged gutters also cannot effectively direct water away from the roof. As a result, moisture may back up and seep into the roof deck or fascia, where it can cause leaks and compound existing damage. Address clogged gutters as soon as possible to prevent that from happening.

2. Damaged Shingles

Missing or damaged shingles leave roofing vulnerable to the elements. Temperature fluctuations, sun exposure, and moisture can wear shingles down over time, while strong winds or blunt force, such as from falling tree limbs, can knock them off. If pieces are missing, cracked, curling, or dented, it’s time to schedule roof repair. If just a small portion of the roof is affected, you can probably fix or replace the damaged pieces, but a more widespread problem may make roof replacement necessary.

3. Leaks

Leaks aren’t always immediately apparent, especially if your attic is well-insulated. Keep an eye out for mildew, mold, pooling water, or yellow or brownish water stains on the walls and ceiling. You may also see sunlight infiltrating the attic. A roofer can repair a minor leak, but it’s important to act quickly; small holes or fissures will eventually grow worse and cause more damage.

4. Sagging

Over time, the roof’s foundation, or deck, may begin to wear out and sag. Most roofing systems have multiple degrees of pitch, but the lines should be straight. If areas are sagging or warped, call your roofer. It may be possible to repair it if the damage is limited to a particular area, though often a sagging deck requires full roof replacement.
