Pointe shoes are a product of the 18th century, when influential minds of the ballet world decided female dancers should look as though they were so weightless, they could float away. Pointe shoes, created by Italian dancer, Amalia Brugnoli, were created to support her feet while she balanced her weight on the tops of her toes, previously unassisted. These gorgeous handmade shoes are required for ballet dancers who want to take dance classes using this technique. Here is a guide to frequently asked questions about Pointe shoes.

What You Need to Know About Pointe Shoes

How should Pointe shoes fit?

dance classes

Your shoes should be snug with pressure at the end of the foot when flat, without totally restricting toe movement or forcing the toes to curl. To ensure you have the right size, try on your Pointe shoes and stand with one foot en Pointe, without weight or pressure. If the sole of the shoe is level with the heel, you've got a perfect fit.

Can you buy them with room to grow?

Pointe shoes are designed to be worn close to your foot in order to provide optimal support. If your shoes don't fit your feet right now, they don't fit. A shoe that is not the right size for your foot can cause your foot to slide in the shoe, which can result in blisters, calluses, strained tendons and ligaments, bruised toenails and broken bones.

Is there an easier way to break them in?

New Pointe shoes are extremely stiff. Beginners estimate that it takes about 8 to 10 hours to fully break them in. Dancers have their own ways of making their shoes more comfortable and wearable, including using a little bit of rubbing alcohol over the box while wearing. Always consult your ballet teacher before manipulating Pointe shoes to ensure they do not get ruined.

How do I know when to buy a new pair?

For professional dancers, pointe shoes last about 10 to 20 hours. For beginners new to Pointe dance classes, you'll need new shoes as soon as you no longer feel supported. If you notice your weight is rolling over en Pointe, the platform is starting to feel soft or mushy, or like you can feel the floor, it's time for a new pair.
