Dance is so ingrained in who we are, it’s no surprise that young people so quickly take to kids' dance classes. These lessons can be a fun, enriching experience that allows children to tap into their creative and expressive side. If your child shows an interest in performance and dance, here are some dance genres they might enjoy exploring.

5 Popular Genre’s for Kids' Dance Classes

1. Ballet

Ballet is a Renaissance-era form of dance that has since become one of the world’s most widespread, and it emphasizes smooth, elegant movements and excellent body control. Stage performances can be both sparse and elaborate. Ballet is a great place for kids to start because it requires a mix of coordination, technique, and engagement with music.

2. Jazz

Jazz is a broad category of dance that is known for being high-energy and free of firm restrictions. Popular dances such as the Lindy Hop and swing dancing are rooted in the jazz style. Upbeat movements and improvisation are both expected and encouraged. If your child seems to be a performer at heart, they might be well-suited to jazz dance lessons.

3. Tap

With tap, the dancer is also an instrument, utilizing their feet as a form of percussion just as much as a way to dance. Because tap involves making noise as part of your routine, it’s perfect for children who already show an inclination toward performing music. If they love the sound of their own feet, a tap dance class may be right for them.

4. Hip-Hop

Sometimes called street dance because it originated on the streets of U.S. cities, hip-hop dance is high-energy, intense, and snappy. It’s also highly improvisational and free of strict rules. If you’ve seen hip-hop music videos or modern cheer performances, you have an idea of what hip-hop dance looks like. This is a great choice for kids who like to perform in groups, or who like to freely express themselves.

5. Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a broad genre that is a blend of ballet, jazz, and hip-hop, among other influences. Because it can be performed to virtually any genre of music, contemporary dance can be seen in a wide array of contexts. Young people who aren’t sure what genre of dance they like best might find themselves drawn to contemporary dance, as it will give them an opportunity to explore several genres at once.
