With the impending holiday season, family and couple portraits are a fun way to capture the moment and send good tidings to loved ones. This year, adding your pets into the mix can enhance the charm of your images. If you decide to add your four-legged friend to your photography session, here's a quick guide to review to ensure the process is fun and the final product is everything you imagined.

A Guide to Photography Sessions with Pets

How Can You Prepare Your Pet Before Your Photographer Arrives?

While guaranteed to be adorable, incorporating a pet into your photography session adds a level of unpredictability. In the weeks and days before your appointment, focus on getting your dog or cat familiar with posing.

Test their reaction when you point a camera or even a phone in front of them. Brush up on commands like sit and stay so they're sharp and ready. Consider a run-through with the family where you practice your poses, positions, and outfits. Creating a bit of familiarity can reduce stress and increase obedience when it's picture day.

What Steps Should You Follow the Day of the Shoot?

Before your photographer arrives, make sure your pet is at ease and relaxed. Whether it's taking them for a long walk, playing for a few minutes to expel extra energy, or feeding them their favorite meal, a bit of pampering will help eliminate stress.

During your session, be sure to get a few shots and poses without your pet, just in case they struggle to cooperate. Refrain from trying to make your dog or cat stick around for every setup. When it's time for them to shine, have their favorite toys and treats handy. Ask a friend or neighbor to join in the experience by holding a treat or toy off camera. This will keep your pet's attention and can help them focus on the lens. Noisemakers or bells are also helpful in getting a cute head tilt or a look at the camera.

Throughout the shoot, remember to have a good time. What might feel like an outtake or a silly face from your pet could turn out to be the best picture in the bunch.
