Garage doors rely on a torsion spring system for safe and steady motion. Unfortunately, this system is prone to wear and tear due to frequent use. As a result, many homeowners experience difficulty opening and closing. Use this guide to learn additional reasons why garage doors get stuck and what to do if you experience one.

Why Does the Garage Not Open?

1. Misalignment of Photo Eye

Photo eyes are safety sensors used to detect anything that comes into the garage door's path. These sensors send a beam to connect and signal the system for safe opening and closing. However, when these devices are misaligned, the beams are disrupted, disconnecting the two sensors. As a result, the sensors signal the system not to open or close because they detect a person or object disrupting the beams. To address the issue, inspect the devices on each side. Then, use a level to ensure the eyes are positioned at equal heights. If there's no issue with alignment, clear off any dust and debris on the sensor with a tissue. This prevents the photo eye from detecting dust and debris as an obstruction in the garage door's path.

2. Twisted Cables

Cables are connected with the torsion and extension springs to support opening and closing. Unfortunately, the spring cannot help lift the door when these cables twist. Avoid prolonging the problem by using an adjustable wrench to remove a kink or twist. Then, apply the wrench with enough force to keep the cable tight. However, if the cable snaps completely, hire a professional to fix the problem to avoid getting hurt while rewinding the cables. These technicians can help replace the cables and align the torsion spring for a smooth opening.

3. Issues with Remote Control

Remote controls open and close the door using a radio wave at a specific frequency. If the battery dies, replace it with 3-volt lithium or a 12-volt battery. Then, reset the remote by checking the user manual for reprogramming instructions. However, if the remote control is missing, consider resetting the garage's access code and erasing the remote from memory to prevent anyone with the remote from accessing your home. Then, invest in a replacement with a new access code or install an app on your phone to connect the garage door settings to eliminate using a remote control.
