While some people are born allergic to certain foods, others develop allergies later in life, drastically changing the way they eat. In some cases, allergic reactions can be mild. However, they shouldn't be experimented with, as they can become progressively worse with exposure. To keep you safe from potential allergic reactions, use these tips for ordering from a restaurant

How to Order Out With Food Allergies

1. Choose Wisely

Doing a bit of research on the restaurant allows you to understand the options better. Restaurants that make everything in-house will know much more about the ingredients, as well as how and where a dish is prepared.

A company that orders prepackaged items may not have access to this information. Chain establishments have an advantage for patrons with allergies, as their recipes often don't vary from franchise to franchise.

2. Inform the Staff

Have your food allergy chef card available to give to the staff, manager, or chef to ensure the establishment is aware of your specific allergies. This card also explains how the meal needs to be prepared and reminds the kitchen employees that they'll need to switch gloves, clean and disinfect surfaces, and use new utensils while handling the food. The host or hostess should also be made aware of the situation before seating you, as it's possible for allergens to be on the table or chair.

3. Keep it Simple

When ordering, pick a dish that involves simple preparation and few ingredients like a baked potato, steamed vegetables, or roast chicken. Deep-fried dishes are often prepared in a shared space and have a higher likelihood of cross-contamination. If the chef or staff can't confirm every ingredient, choose a different dish.

4. Double-Check

When the dish is brought to you, ask the server to confirm what ingredients were eliminated and that it was prepared in a sanitized space. Check that the dish is brought out separately and not in contact with a plate with possible allergens. Before diving in, make sure the meal is free of any garnishes or ingredients not discussed ahead of time.

5. Be Prepared

Accidents can still happen under the best circumstances. Be sure to have your medication or an EpiPen® nearby if an allergen mistakenly makes it onto your plate. Wearing a medical bracelet identifying your allergies can be lifesaving in an emergency.
