For centuries, Lei flowers have been used in Hawaii to mark occasions ranging from birthdays to graduations and weddings. Like many aspects of traditional Hawaiian culture, these garlands come with a unique code of etiquette and customs which can be confusing to those unfamiliar with them. Here are a few things to keep in mind the next time you visit the islands and have a lei handed to you.

What You Should Know About Wearing Lei Flowers

1. Giving

There are several ways to give a lei. Customarily, a lei is placed around the neck of the recipient by the person giving it. The giver usually then kisses the recipient on the cheek. Alternatively, an individual may bow while holding a lei out, allowing the recipient to place it around their neck for themselves.

2. Receiving

The first and most important rule of receiving lei is to never refuse one, as refusing one is seen as deeply disrespectful. Neither should you take a lei off in the presence of the person who gave it to you.

If you’re allergic to the flowers given to you, apologize and explain to the giver and offer to place the lei in a prominent position, such as at the head of a table or on a mantle. After receiving a lei, treat it with care and respect to indicate your gratitude and consideration.

3. Wearing

Lei can be worn at any time and by anyone for any reason. Don’t wear a lei which you intend to give to someone else, and only give open-ended lei to pregnant women, as the closed style is considered to be bad luck. Before buying lei for a major event, consult with a florist about the most appropriate flowers to use for each occasion.
