Spotter trucks are vehicles that move trailers and large cargo containers. Also called yard trucks, yard spotters, and terminal tractors, these powerful vehicles can be found in a variety of settings, including ports, truck terminals, cargo yards, distribution centers, and warehouses. Here are a few helpful facts about these trucks and the benefits they provide.

Design & Operation

A spotter truck has a cab made of 12-gauge steel with an all-around view and a rear door. It is designed to accommodate a hydraulic fifth wheel, which lets the driver move trailers without leaving the cab or activating the landing gear. After a trailer is moved, the driver can drop it to the ground and uncouple the fifth wheel while remaining in the cab. This allows for faster movement of trailers and cargo—usually three to four times greater than the amount of cargo you can move with a standard trailer in the same amount of time.

Benefits

Spotter Truck

Whether leased or owned, a spotter truck is an investment that can pay for itself over the long term. It is designed for the rough conditions and terrain that come with moving trailers and cargo, so maintenance and repair costs are minimal.

It can also minimize injury risk for workers. Constant climbing in and out of the cab and maneuvering around to crank a landing gear can easily lead to repetitive stress injuries. The 360-degree view from the cab ensures clearer sightlines, reducing the likelihood of an accident.

Workers who use these trucks do not need to carry a commercial driver's license. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) both consider yard trucks to be powered industrial trucks, which means no special licensure or certification is needed to operate them.
