Often, the classics we’re assigned to read in school hold much more value when we go back to revisit them later in life. When you were a student juggling math, science, and history classes, too, you may not have had time to really enjoy the books you read. If you’re ready to make your way through the canon of English literature now that you’ve reached adulthood, here are five books to put on your list.

What Are the Classic Books No Adult Should Miss?

1. Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

Perhaps the best-known romance novels of all time, this witty love story pairs two unlikely characters to show how opposites can attract. Readers will fall for Austen’s prose, which injects charm and humor into the characters’ prim and proper world.

2. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

books

Exploring subjects such as wealth and the American dream, this classic examines the life of Jay Gatsby, a millionaire in his prime during the Roaring Twenties in New York City. A century later, it’s not difficult for readers to relate to the exhilaration of a world that’s rapidly evolving.

3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Set in the early 1900s in the Deep South, To Kill a Mockingbird explores themes of race, prejudice, and hypocrisy to create a complex novel told from the perspective of two children. While this poignant novel was written in 1960, its ideas still hold tremendous value today.

4. 1984 by George Orwell

While George Orwell’s 1984 was penned more than 70 years ago, the dystopian themes are as relevant as ever. Follow along as protagonist Winston Smith finds himself at odds with a society that’s overseen by Big Brother, a totalitarian leader who forbids individuality and freedom.

5. Beloved by Toni Morrison

You can’t go wrong with any Toni Morrison novels, but this Pulitzer Prize-winning work is among this author’s most popular books. The novel explores themes of family and takes the reader through the story of a former slave in Kentucky who struggles to overcome her past.
