Vinyl siding is a home’s first line of defense against the elements. As such, it can sustain damage over time, especially during the spring and summer seasons when weather may present extreme conditions. If you manage several properties with vinyl siding, here are some types of damage to watch for.

Common Damage Sustained By Vinyl Siding

1. Sun Damage

Direct sunlight and extreme temperatures can damage siding in several ways. For one, it may lead to warping, though this issue is most common when siding is installed improperly. In such cases, the vinyl will contract in high temperatures, causing the vinyl to buckle or warp. When installed correctly, there will be larger nail slots to allow for expansion and contraction with temperature variations, thereby preventing this issue.

Direct sunlight coupled with high heat could also melt vinyl in rare cases. More frequently, however, the concern with sunlight is fading. It’s likely to have siding fade significantly within 10 years. While repainting may be an option, it may be more economical to simply replace aging siding.

2. Hail Damage

Hail is a common issue during severe storms. With high winds, it could lead to divots in your siding, or even cracks or holes. Siding can also be damaged by projectiles if it’s windy enough. Because these imperfections can leave a home vulnerable to moisture damage and insects, they should be addressed promptly. Be sure to check your properties’ siding for cracks, dents, and any other damage after severe storms.

3. Moisture

Vinyl siding that’s been installed properly should keep moisture from humid weather and precipitation at bay. Yet, if it’s not sealed effectively, moisture can make its way between the panels, potentially leading to issues like wood rot and other structural damage. Look for water marks, which usually appear as discoloration, as well as mold or mildew, which can range in color from green to black.
