Brake pads serve as a buffer between the calipers and rotors in your car's wheels. These two components squeeze together to slow down your vehicle when pressing the brake pedal. Over time, brake pads experience normal wear and tear and will need to be replaced. Knowing the signs of when it's time for new brake pads will help you get to the mechanic right away, as putting this off can result in more extensive brake service or repairs down the road. Here are three signs that you should replace your brake pads.

How to Know When Your Car Needs New Brake Pads

1. Brake Fading

Worn brake pads can cause your brakes to be less responsive when you are slowing down. This issue is commonly known as "brake fading." Living in an area with many hills or places where you're constantly applying a large amount of pressure on your brakes wears brake pads out quicker due to the friction. Brake fading can also be caused by a leak in brake fluid or an air leak in the brake hose.

2. Odd Noises

A telltale sign of worn brake pads is hearing a screeching sound when braking. There is a small metal indicator that will start making this sound to alert you when it's time for new brake pads. If you hear more of a grinding, metal-on-metal sound, your brake pads may be worn out to the point where they're no longer able to serve as a buffer between the calipers and rotors. On the other hand, hearing a clicking noise when slowing down could mean your brake pads are loose. They should be tightened or replaced during a brake service as soon as possible.

3. Pulling to One Side

It is common for your brake pads to wear unevenly, making one side weaker than the other. When this occurs, you'll notice your vehicle starting to pull to one side while braking. If this problem is ignored for too long, your vehicle's steering components will become over-stressed, causing more serious damage. You may also need a brake fluid change or adjustment to resolve the issue.
