A flickering light may not seem that problematic, but it's often a signal that a significant voltage drop or overload is happening somewhere in your household. If this continues to happen, it can damage your electronics and potentially start a house fire. Fortunately, your lights are immediate indicators that something is amiss, and you should contact an electrician

Why Are Your Lights Going In & Out?

1. Bulb Problems

When only one light is flickering, it may be an issue with the bulb. Over time, bulbs can become loose over, resulting in a weaker socket connection, so check that it is screwed in tightly before considering other options. If you use fluorescent bulbs, this is a normal operating condition under cold temperatures and should stop flickering once it's warmed up.

On the other hand, light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs commonly exhibit this symptom when they are connected to an incompatible dimmer or one that's between settings. If you aren't sure which bulb your dimmer system requires, have an electrician take a look.

2. Circuit Overload

If you notice the lights start to flash when you turn on the dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, or air conditioner, it's possible the circuit is being overloaded. This is a common problem with large appliances because they draw a significant amount of current from the circuit. If the wiring or circuit breaker is outdated, it could mean they are not able to deliver enough voltage.

An electrician can update your circuit layout to ensure all of your electrical devices can safely pull current without this happening or the breaker flipping.

3.  Loose Wiring

Wires constantly undergo a cycle of heating and cooling, so the connections will naturally loosen with the repetitive expanding and contracting. When this happens, it can result in flickering lights because the voltage isn't being diverted properly.

The grounding system, circuit breakers, and ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) throughout your home do a good job at shutting down outlets that are receiving excess current flow. However, if you can't find another explanation for flickering lights, it may be an early warning sign to contact an electrician and have them inspect the wiring for problems.
