With spring here and summer just around the corner, people are enjoying warmer temperatures and more daylight hours as they prepare for vacations, barbecues, and other warm-weather events. For those with seasonal allergies, it can also mean a significant uptick in distressing symptoms. If you experience coughing, sneezing, itching, watery eyes, or other symptoms, allergy testing can identify what's causing your flareups and the most appropriate treatment options to manage your warm-weather allergies.

How to Manage Warm-Weather Allergies

1. Minimize Exposure to Triggers

If you haven't done so yet, schedule allergy testing to determine the triggers causing your reactions. Grass, pollen, and mold are among the common springtime triggers, so try to limit your exposure as much as you can. The pollen count is highest between March and June. You can check the count in your area, and if you must be out and about, wearing a high-quality mask can help. Keep the windows closed when your lawn or another in your neighborhood is being mowed. You can also change your clothes upon coming inside after a long period outdoors, so you aren't vulnerable to allergens lingering on your clothing.

2. Use Air Conditioning

When indoors, use air conditioning as often as you can. This way, you can keep windows closed and limit the number of allergens. However, remember that an air conditioner doesn't generate pure air, either—it can easily disperse dust, dander, and other fine particles within the home. For this reason, be mindful of using a high-efficiency HVAC filter. The filter should be changed at least once a month throughout the spring and summer.

3. Consider Time of Day and Weather Conditions

Pollen and other allergens are naturally present at higher levels in the early morning. If possible, avoid outdoor activities during this time of day. Also, take advantage of wet days. Nobody likes to be cooped up inside during spring and summer, but folks with significant allergies often have to. However, after a period of rainfall, the moisture often helps clear away pollen and other irritants, making this an ideal time to be outdoors if you have allergies.
