Medicare Plan G, also known as "Medigap" insurance, is supplemental insurance sold by private companies that fills in gaps in Medicare coverage. For instance, it covers copayments, deductibles, and additional costs you must otherwise pay out of pocket. Here is a brief guide to Plan G.

What Does Plan G Cover?

Medicare

Medigap insurance is one of the most comprehensive plans available. It essentially takes the place of Plan F, which is no longer available to new enrollees but remains open to those who signed up for it by Jan. 1, 2020. Here is some of what Plan G covers:

  • Copays, coinsurance, and deductibles for Medicare Part A, which covers inpatient hospital services and hospice care
  • Copays, coinsurance, and excess charges for Medicare Part B diagnostic services and preventive care; deductibles are not covered
  • The first three pints of blood for transfusions
  • Foreign travel emergencies (80%)
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance

Is Plan G Right for You?

Plan G is ideal for people ages 65 and up who want to simplify their medical expenses or who travel out of the country frequently. It minimizes unexpected costs and keeps expenses more predictable. It also provides flexibility to see the doctor you prefer, since it covers excess charges from physicians who don’t participate in Medicare.

However, it is one of the most expensive plans and does not offer the protection of out-of-pocket limits. Also, Plan G is only available to people with Original Medicare. Those with Advantage plans do not qualify.
