Once you reach 65 years of age, you’ll be eligible for Medicare. Some of the needs covered by the federal health insurance program include hospital visits, prescription drugs, and medical appointments. When you sign up, you’ll have the opportunity to select from four different parts. Here’s what you should know about each one.

A Guide to the Parts of Medicare

1. Part A

This provides coverage for inpatient hospital care, including overnight stays and procedures. The plan also covers hospice care and, in a limited capacity, home health care and stays at skilled nursing facilities.

2. Part B

This is medical insurance that covers doctor visits and other types of outpatient services, including urgent care and emergency room visits. It also covers preventive care, including screenings and vaccines, and medical equipment, such as walkers and wheelchairs. Together, Parts A and B are referred to as Original Medicare.

3. Part C

Also known as Medicare Advantage, Part C offers plans provided by private insurance companies instead of the government. These plans include coverage for everything included in Parts A and B and are typically bundled with Part D for convenience. Unlike A and B, which allow you to use doctors and hospitals anywhere in the country, you usually need to use in-network providers. The advantage is that your out-of-pocket costs may be lower, and your plan may include additional benefits, such as dental, vision, and hearing.

4. Part D

This part is also offered by private health insurers and covers prescription drug costs. The plan features five tiers, each of which has a different copay. The first applies to preferred generic drugs, the second to generics, the third to preferred brand names, and the fourth to nonpreferred brand names. The final tier applies to specialty drugs. When you join Original Medicare, you can purchase a Part D plan, or you can add one to your Part C coverage.
