Effective site preparation is the starting point for any successful building project. To prep for construction, site work contractors perform a variety of services that can minimize issues and prevent costly mistakes later, including excavating the foundation and grading the surface. Here are a few factors that may influence the preparation of your building site as you get ready for construction to begin.

A Guide to Preparing a Building Site

1. Building Location & Elevation

The intended position of the building on the site determines how your site preparation contractor will approach the job. They might decide to access the site from the main entrance or build a temporary road for bringing in heavy equipment and removing debris.

If the building is going to be constructed on a downslope, site work professionals will also begin grading the land to redirect water away from the area. This will keep the excavation site from flooding and prevent landscape erosion in the later stages of the project.

2. Available Utilities

Your site preparation contractor will need access to water, electricity, and sanitation services. If utilities are already available at the job site, your contractor may start by installing electrical panels, plumbing, and other access points.

However, many construction sites aren’t yet connected to municipal utilities. In this case, your contractor may need to connect to these services first or bring their own generators, water supply, and sanitation services in the meantime.

3. Access to the Perimeter of the Site

Ideally, your site work contractor will be able to access the entire perimeter of the proposed construction site. If they are not able to move equipment and vehicles around the sides of the building, they may need to take additional steps to improve accessibility. For instance, there may be a row of trees along one edge of the building, or the excavation site may be located close to the property line. Based on these constraints, your contractor may decide to clear away plant life or begin work at one corner and work their way outward.
