One of the most serious issues people with diabetes face is diabetic neuropathy. Extremely high blood sugar levels can damage nerves in the body, most commonly, in the feet and legs. This can result in large, unnoticed sores and infections that may require amputation. This is why daily diabetic foot care is an integral part of managing this disease. Here are several tips to follow to stay healthy.

A Guide to Important Diabetic Foot Care

1. Look for Injuries

The main concern with neuropathy is unnoticed injuries. Because of the nerve damage, someone with diabetes may not feel a small cut or sore. They won’t notice that it’s worsening or becoming infected until it’s too late.

Check your feet every day. If needed, use a mirror to see all sides or ask someone to help you. Blisters, cuts, cracked skin, corns, and calluses are all a concern. Bandage any you find and see a podiatrist for more extensive treatment.

2. Wash & Dry Your Feet

Your feet pick up a lot of bacteria, and it only requires a small cut for them to cause an infection. This is why washing and cleaning is an essential part of diabetic foot care. It doesn’t have to be for long. Soak your feet in lukewarm water with a mild soap or carefully wash them by hand.

Next, pat them dry with a towel and apply petroleum jelly to keep the skin from cracking. Don’t, however, put it between your toes, as it could cultivate an infection. In winter, apply a moisturizer to keep the skin from drying out and cracking.

3. Clip Your Toenails

Trim your toenails straight across after a warm bath. You can then smooth the edges with a nail file. Doing this will prevent them from growing down into the skin, called an ingrown toenail. This is a common injury and infection that can create more serious problems for people with diabetes.
