A pool cover protects your swimming pool against damage and collecting debris, extends its lifespan, and reduces the need for pool remodeling and maintenance. However, in a northern state like New Jersey, snow can collect on the pool cover and you may worry this could weaken or damage it. Below is what you need to know about the weight of snow and how to clear it.

Can Snow Damage Your Pool Cover?

A single snowfall is highly unlikely to harm the pool cover. It may cause the material to sag, and the cover may freeze to the surface of the pool water. However, the cover should tauten and regain its original shape once the ice thaws and snow melts.

Even if the cover should accumulate a foot or more of snow, there is no need for alarm. In fact, the weight of snow can hold down the fabric in the face of high winds, which is actually helpful. However, if two feet or more should accumulate, it's time to consider snow removal.

How and When Should You Clear the Snow?

If the cover accumulates three or more feet of snow, you should start clearing it away immediately to avoid the possibility of cover damage, pool damage, and expensive pool remodeling. Never use an object with sharp or metal edges, but rather choose a rounded, plastic shovel or a leaf blower.

Use a soft-bristled brush to remove wet or heavy snow from around the edges of the pool. For deep drifts, wrap a heat cable around the power cord of a cover pump. The heat cable speeds up snowmelt and the cover pump removes the melting water and relieves the cover of considerable weight.
