A fresh layer of sod is a great way to bring life to a yard. It’s much faster than seed and will require some specific maintenance to root into the soil. Sticking with a proven plan will ensure the newly sodded lawn looks even and healthy in the coming weeks. Plan on using the following tips after installation.

How to Care for New Sod

1. Water Correctly

Sod needs a lot of water because heat builds up in the stacked sod. Plan to water the entire lawn for at least 20 minutes twice a day. This ensures the lawn gets around 6 inches of water. Try to water in the morning and late afternoon when the sun is low to prevent evaporation.

2. Wait to Mow

You need to let your sodded lawn develop a healthy root system, so hold off on mowing for at least 3 weeks if you install the rolls during spring. If you apply them during winter, don’t mow until 3 weeks after the growing season begins.

To determine this, it’s best to consult a lawn maintenance company. Know also that when you do mow, set the blade to high so it leaves at least one-third of the grass blades. This will prevent damage.

3. Know When to Fertilize

Fresh sod needs nutrients to grow, so plan to apply fertilizer one month after installation. Look for a granular starter with an 18-24-12 blend of nutrients. Sprinkle this across the lawn in a light layer and then water thoroughly so grass roots can absorb the nutrients.
