Carrying a concealed firearm is your right, but it’s also an enormous responsibility. There are standard safety rules for handling and operating a gun, and taking extra steps will protect yourself and those around you from potentially fatal accidents. Below are a few essential tips for carrying a concealed weapon safely.

How to Carry a Concealed Handgun Properly

1. Avoid Handling the Gun Unnecessarily

Many accidents occur because firearm owners take their weapons out for purposes other than self-defense. Avoid doing this if possible. If you have to unholster it to enter a secured area, make sure you're paying attention and handling the weapon carefully. Always point the barrel away from others, and never place your finger on the trigger when you're not planning to shoot.

2. Choose a High-Quality Holster

firearm

A concealed-carry holster should be made of leather or Kydex® and form-fitted to your specific firearm. Cloth holsters or one-size-fits-all models may be smaller and less expensive, but they also allow too much movement. These options might not completely cover the trigger guard, which also increases the chances of a dangerous accident.

Normal belts for pants aren’t strong enough to hold the weight of a gun, so it will likely shift around during regular activities. Invest in a belt that's specifically designed for carrying concealed.

3. Keep Your Firearm Protected

Well-designed holsters will keep the gun from falling out and shifting around, but the weapon can still be taken by someone else if they know it’s there. Be aware of your firearm at all times, and try to keep the side of your body the weapon is on angled away from other people. Secure the handgun with a retention holster; these have a locking mechanism that keeps others from being able to grab the weapon.
