Having a security monitoring system in place is an important part of keeping your home and family safe from intruders. Today’s burglar alarms are more prepared than ever to play this role. They are fitted with several sensors to quickly alert you to the presence of a break-in. This guide will introduce you to some of the most commonly used ones.

Understanding Door and Window Contacts and Glass Break Sensors

Door and window contacts have the ability to detect when a door or window is opened and closed These contacts would ideally be placed on all doors and windows in your home. When a door or window is opened or otherwise tampered with, the contact delivers a signal to the main alarm which causes it to sound. Glass break sensors are devices that notify your main alarm to sound when glass is broken. They work by using a microphone that listens for the frequency of broken glass.

Understanding Motion Sensors

These sensors do not generate or radiate their own energy. Instead, they detect changes in surrounding infrared radiation — IR. Passive-infrared motion detectors are the most common type found in burglar alarms. Gradual fluctuations are not detected by the sensor to prevent the alarm from sounding when small changes in temperature occur throughout the day. Also, as IR cannot penetrate glass, this type of sensor cannot detect motion outside the home when used indoors.
