Home security monitoring systems provide a layer of protection for your valuable belongings and those you love most. While many of today’s systems don’t rely on wire cables or moving parts, they do require routine maintenance to keep operating at maximum efficiency. Below are a few tips for taking care of your security monitoring system.

How to Maintain Your Home Security System

1. Trim Your Landscaping

Your surveillance cameras may be working perfectly, but overgrown shrubs and tree branches can obscure their view. While focusing on the technology in the security system is important, you should also focus on their surroundings.

Keep bushes and trees around your security system trimmed back, and check the feeds regularly for obstructions. Bugs are also drawn to the LED lights on cameras, so you may need to sweep away spider webs once a week.

2. Clean the Lenses

Even if the camera is protected by a hood or visor, dirt and pollen can build up on the lenses. Dirty lenses can make it difficult to see what’s going on in your property, so they should always be kept spotless.

To ensure your cameras have the clearest view possible, clean the lenses at least twice per year. Use a can of compressed air to blow away dust and dirt particles, then wipe the lenses with a microfiber glass-cleaning cloth.

3. Check the Connections

Most modern security monitoring systems are wireless, but some still rely on wiring to transmit data from the cameras to the recording device. Your security system may also have wires connecting the cameras to your home’s electrical system.

Thunderstorms, deliberate tampering, and animal activity can loosen those connections over time, or expose wires to corrosion. Twice a year, inspect the wires for missing insulation, loose connections, and other signs of damage, and replace any faulty wires immediately.
