Summer in Alabama brings tropical storms, hurricanes, and other weather that can leave fallen trees, branches, and other debris all over your yard. Cleaning up after a major weather event can seem like an overwhelming project, but a plan and the right power tools can make it more manageable. Below are a few tips for cleaning up your yard after a storm.

How to Clean Up Storm Debris

1. Start With Larger Pieces

Tackling the piles of leaves and smaller sticks may be easier, but larger branches or broken fencing can trap moisture and keep sunlight away from your grass. Getting these larger pieces out of the way first will make the rest of the project easier and minimize some of the damage.

Tree trunks and other large debris might be too heavy to move without a crane or truck. However, you can cut these obstacles down to size by renting a chainsaw from your local power tool store.

2. Rake Up Twigs & Leaves

Carpets of leaves and twigs on your lawn can trap moisture, creating the perfect conditions for mold and harmful microorganisms. They can also attract insects and other pests that may find their way into your house.

As soon as you have the larger debris out of the way, rake the leaves and smaller pieces of wood into separate piles. Bag the rubbish up as soon as possible, and take it off the lawn, so the soil has a chance to dry out.

3. Check for Drainage Issues

Immediately after the storm is the perfect time to address drainage issues that can cause your lawn to flood. Standing water can erode valuable topsoil, kill grass, and cause sidewalks and walkways to collapse.

After a storm, check the yard for large puddles and standing water. Filling pits in the yard with new soil or gravel can help keep water from flooding your flower beds or pooling around the foundation. You may also want to line your driveway with gravel to minimize the risk of erosion.
