Summertime is one of the most popular tourism seasons at Denali National Park, and for good reasons. During the warm weather, the park’s natural beauty is on full display and the weather is mild enough to take in all of the sights. If you’re planning a trip this summer, here are some activities to add to your list.
What to Do in Denali This Summer
1. Take a Bus Tour
Many of the roads within Denali National Park are limited to bus travel. After Mile 15 of the park, the “backcountry” begins, which can only be traversed by tour buses.
Fortunately, there are several tourism companies that offer bus trips so you can explore the deepest areas of the park that are impassable by foot. A bus tour will allow you and your fellow travelers to catch exquisite views of the landscape and wildlife safely.
2. Go Hiking
Of course, outdoors enthusiasts can also enjoy the trails on foot in some areas. The more accessible “frontcountry” area of the park has a few established trails. For a quick jaunt, try the Horseshoe Lake Trail or the Savage River Loop Trail, both of which are roughly two-mile loops.
If you have more time and energy, set out on the Savage River Alpine Trail for a four-mile trek, but prepare for a steep climb. Finally, the Mt. Healy Overlook Trail is an out-and-back trip with intense inclines, but is worth the challenge for hiking enthusiasts.
3. Ride in a Helicopter
One of the most unforgettable tourism experiences to consider is going “flightseeing;” or seeing Denali National Park by air. Take a plane or helicopter to get a bird’s eye view of the breathtaking scenery, including the park’s immense mountain peaks.
Some companies will even pick you up from your hotel and transport you to the boarding area. If you’re lucky and the weather is mild, you may even land on a glacier for some wow-worthy photo ops.
No matter what your itinerary for Denali National Park looks like, you’ll need comfortable lodging to relax in after your adventures. A hotel with all the best tourism perks to offer is Denali Totem Inn. This family owned and operated hotel is just a few miles north of the park’s entrance and has all the accommodations you’ll need to feel right at home.
