Whether you currently wear Invisalign® aligners or you’re thinking about getting them instead of conventional braces, it’s important to be mindful of adopting a proper care routine. Paying regular attention to them will keep them clean and in good shape so that they can work their magic. Here are three tips you should know.

How to Care for Your Invisalign Aligners

1. Clean Them Regularly

You’ll wear each set of aligners for a week to two weeks, depending on the plan your dentist creates for you. Each day, clean the aligners with a soft toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste. There are also cleaning solutions designed especially for the clear aligners.

Avoid rinsing them in warm or hot water, as this could cause the material to melt slightly and alter the fit. If you neglect to clean them, they could develop stains that take away from the clear, pristine appearance.

2. Soak Them Often

Although you’ll be advised to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day in most cases, there will be times when you remove them, such as mealtimes. During those moments, it’s best to soak them in a solution filled with lukewarm water and specialized crystals formulated to disinfect them.

Allow them to soak for at least 15 minutes a few times a week. You can finish by brushing them gently to remove any residue. This mixture will prevent odors and keep the aligners looking their best.

3. Keep Them Covered

You’ll remove your Invisalign when you’re eating or brushing your teeth. Always protect their integrity by placing them in the storage case given to you. You'll likely be given a couple of cases, so you can always keep one with you on the go and one handy at home. The case will protect the aligners from contamination, which also protects your mouth from bacteria.
