Many people dream about skydiving. Free fall is one of the rarest experiences a human being can have, and those who have done it find their lives changed forever. Still, as exciting as the adrenaline rush is, it can seem a little scary. Even if you’re raring to go, you probably have a few questions. Below, Pacific Skydiving Center in Wailua, HI, answers some of the most common questions they’re asked every day.

5 FAQs Beginners Have About Skydiving

1. Is Skydiving Safe?

skydivingStatistically speaking, skydiving is safer than driving to work. It may not be something people do every day and may even seem to go against your most basic instincts in regards to safety, but you’re in good hands. Reputable skydiving schools, like Pacific Skydiving Center, are regulated by the United States Parachute Association (USPA), which requires them to follow the highest safety standards and hire only experienced and licensed professionals.

2. How Do We Land?

Parachute landings vary. Believe it or not, some are quite soft, even allowing you to stand up. Most landings are harder, though, so be prepared for impact. When you go to Pacific Skydiving Center, you’ll land on a special grassy landing zone.

3. Is There a Jolt When the Parachute Opens?

When the parachute first opens, expect a medium jolt. They can sometimes open hard, but not enough to cause injuries. If you have any doubts, let your instructor know and speak with your physician.

4. How Long Does Free Fall Last?

After your initial plane flight to jump altitude, your time spent in free fall depends on many factors, including your altitude, tandem weight, and the time of year. It can last anywhere between 20 to 60 seconds, and afterward, your parachute flight will last about 10 minutes.

5. Will I Pass Out?

The chances of passing out during free fall are very slim. But if you do, you’ll be safely secured to a certified USPA tandem instructor the whole time. (Try to keep your eyes open, though, or you’ll miss the incredible view!)
